I 'prolly woulda sewn your whole wiggly edge shut. Then put the zipper across the straight edge of the fabric where you have it folded. That way you don't have to zip around the reel. You just have a straight zip along the rod. Maybe put a pocket on the side for stashing stuff like hooks or bobbers. Very cool. Good idea.
